The late teens and young adult years are filled with tremendous potential. Individuals take large steps towards their independence and learn as much about their environment as about themselves. This is the perfect time to practice the art of self-reflection and to discern what is really important to the self. This course is filled with a variety of exercises to promote self-discovery, self-acceptance and self-confidence.
The literature on happiness both from the fields of psychology and economics have produced many theories from the set point theory to cognitive biases. We will learn about some of these theories, critically discuss them and talk about how they can help us become happier.
The definition of what constitutes happiness has been a source of controversy since at least Ancient Greece. Is happiness about feeling good? Is it about living a good live? We will learn about these various definitions and create our own.
We will learn how the 7 basic human needs guide us unconsciously when we make choices. And how each of us ranks these 7 needs differently. This will help us understand what matters to us most and to find strategies to align our lives with our authentic desires.
How does happiness manifest itself physiologically? Why do some individuals seem to be of a natural sunny disposition while others tend to be more melancholic? What can be changed? How? We will look at foods, movement and a variety of other practices to help boost joy and contentment.
What practices can help us sustain a lifestyle conducive to a happier life? Together, we will explore a variety of practices in and outside the group sessions, including mindfulness, meditation and guided visualizations.as well as exercises to reduce stress, boost one's mood and manage negative emotions.
During the duration of the course, students have access to an online community where they can share their questions, experiences and breakthroughs and inspire each other.
The class will provide a safe space for learning, discussion and self-discovery where all are encouraged to express their authentic selves.
Happiness boosting practices will be assigned between sessions to help instill new habits and integrate the material discussed.
